ClamWin Antivirus 2011 Report

ClamWin Antivirus is antivirus software for Windows. It provides a graphical user interface to the Clam AntiVirus engine. With ClamWin you can schedule regular virus scans, and integration into outlook helps to protect against virus infected email attachments. The software itself is automatically updated regularly which helps both to protect against viruses which might target ClamWin, and to ensure ClamWin remains capable of detecting the most up-to-date incarnations of viruses. Because this software is in no way commercial it does what it should without a fuss – it is built by people who know what they want out of the software – not by people who want to spread fear in order to increase sales. Its six false positives were more than the amount from any other free antivirus software save for Comodo Internet Security (which had an astonishing 62). It was the second-slowest app in on-access scanning–only PC Tools Antivirus had slower scan times–and it put up the worst numbers for disinfection, detecting only six out of ten infections and cleaning only five. In a rare shining performance, it identified all ten active rootkits (stealth malware designed to hide other infections). In contrast, however, it did the worst job of removing those rootkits, cleaning up just four. ClamWin does not yet automatically scan files as they are read and written. This feature is planned for inclusion in the next major version update and has been claimed to be in development since at least 10 December 2005 For users of older systems, it is currently possible to add this functionality by using Winpooch.
